I just picked up a copy of the
new 1/72 EC-135 from AMtech ($40 USD) and as I suspected, it is uses the same
molds as the AMT-Ertl kit including referencing that manufacturer in their
paperwork. After reading the multiple documents included with the kit, one of
which mentions how to fix the wing drooping problem, there is quite a bit of
pride put into producing this kit. Another document explains the history of the
four versions on the C-135 than can be built as well as interviews with the
crews and pilots who flew the aircraft.

I compared the
components in the kit to my AMT-Ertl kit and they are definitely from the same
molds. My only disappointment is the nose section. The large radome is molded
into the fuselage so if you want to make the standard nose aircraft, one would
have to make a resin copy from an old AMT-Ertl kit. I was hoping a
refueling boom was included when I noticed parts of the boom itself
but the boomer station and probe are not included. Four versions of the 135 can
be built however none have the refueling boom, instead, black box provided resin
parts to replace the boom section. There are also two engine choices, J-57
turbojet and the TF-33 turbofan.
I am very glad to see AMtech
releasing this popular kit and I am hopeful that they will be producing the
KC-135 versions with the standard nose section. AMtech is definitely making the
right move by producing this popular kit.
